What Is Pserimos Known For?
Pserimos turns up in Homer, grouped with a cluster of small islands the poet called the Islands of Kalydnas, and that ancient naming has stuck with the island in one form or another ever since.
Pserimos is known first for that literary connection, and the Roman writer Pliny later recorded the island under the name Pserema, confirming a continuous identity stretching back roughly two thousand years. Through antiquity, Pserimos operated as part of the Commonwealth of Kos and Kalymnos, a dependency confirmed by inscriptions dating to the 3rd century AD listing Pserimos alongside the rulers of Kos at the time. The island later followed the same political path as the rest of the Dodecanese, coming under Ottoman rule in the early 16th century, Italian control from 1912, and finally joining Greece in 1948.
Pserimos is also known for staying car-free, with no roads connecting anywhere on the island, and life centers entirely around Avlakia, the island's single village, built directly on top of the remains of its ancient settlement. Traces of old walls, pottery, and even a Hellenistic altar still surface in the area today, a reminder of how long people have lived on this same small patch of land.
The island's economy has stayed built around fishing and goat farming for generations, and donkeys, sheep, and goats still roam freely across its rocky, hilly terrain, giving Pserimos a working, pastoral character shaped more by daily rural life than by large-scale tourism, connecting today by short boat crossing to Kalymnos and Kos.
