What Is Serres Known For?

Serres holds one of Greece's more surprising conservation stories just outside the city, a lake that didn't exist a century ago and now shelters more water buffalo than anywhere else in the country.

Serres is known first for Lake Kerkini, created in 1932 when a dam was built across the Strymonas River to control flooding and irrigate the surrounding plain. What started as flood control has since developed into one of Greece's ten Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, drawing over 300 recorded bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, storks, and herons, that stop here during spring and autumn migration. The lake also holds Greece's largest population of water buffalo, roughly 4,000 animals, and buffalo meat has become something of a culinary signature for villages along its shore.

That agricultural identity extends across the wider Serres region, since the plain surrounding the city ranks among the most productive in Greece, and the fertile land here has supported farming since well before the modern lake existed, with ancient historians recording an earlier version of the same wetlands under the name Prasiada.

History runs through the area too. Roupel Fort, in the mountains above the village of Promachonas, marks the site of a major battle during the German invasion of Greece in April 1941, and the fortification now operates as a museum honoring that resistance.

Serres is also known locally for its food, and bougatsa, a filled pastry, has become a specific point of pride for the city, worth seeking out before heading toward the lake. Between the wetlands, the fertile plain, and its position roughly an hour and twenty minutes from Thessaloniki, Serres has built a reputation as one of the stronger destinations in Greece for travelers interested in birdwatching and outdoor activity over typical sightseeing.
