What Is Skiathos Known For?

Skiathos gave Greek literature one of its most influential writers, a man who was born and later died in the very same small house still standing in the island's old town today.

Skiathos is known first for Alexandros Papadiamantis, born on the island in 1851 and widely regarded as the father of the modern Greek short story. Over the course of a solitary, largely reclusive life, he wrote more than 180 short stories, several novels including The Murderess, and dozens of essays, drawing on the fishermen, farmers, priests, and widows of his native island for his characters. The poet Constantine Cavafy called him "top of the top," and Nobel laureate George Seferis ranked him above even Greece's most celebrated prose writers of the era. His childhood home in Skiathos Town, where he died in 1911, now operates as a small museum preserving his manuscripts and family belongings.

The island is equally known among aviation enthusiasts for its runway, one of the shortest used for commercial flights anywhere in Europe, built partly on land reclaimed from the sea. Planes on approach pass less than 25 meters above Megali Ammos beach, drawing crowds of spectators to the sand each summer to watch the landings up close, and the airport makes Skiathos the only Sporades island reachable by direct international flight without routing through Athens.

Skiathos also carries a real link to Greek independence, since the first flag of the 1821 revolution was blessed at the Monastery of Evangelistria in 1807. With more than 65 beaches packed into a genuinely small footprint, and its role decades later as one of the real filming locations for Mamma Mia!, Skiathos pairs its literary and historical depth with a coastline connecting easily to Skopelos nearby.
