What Is Skopelos Known For?
Skopelos became the real-world setting for a fictional Greek island once a film crew arrived in 2007, and the connection has shaped how the world sees the place ever since.
Skopelos is known first as the primary filming location for Mamma Mia!, standing in as the movie's fictional island of Kalokairi alongside neighboring Skiathos and the mainland village of Damouchari on the Pelion peninsula. Principal photography on Skopelos itself lasted only about a week, though preparation for those scenes took months, and a production unit of roughly 210 people, including cast members Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, and Pierce Brosnan, worked across the island's beaches and coastline. Kastani Beach, on the southwest coast, hosted many of the film's outdoor dance and musical sequences.
The island is equally known for the Church of Agios Ioannis Kastri, perched atop a roughly 100 meter rock jutting into the sea near Glossa village and reached by climbing over 100 narrow stone steps cut directly into the cliff. The chapel served as the exterior setting for the film's wedding scene, though its interior proved far too small for filming, so a larger replica was built at Pinewood Studios outside London. Local tradition ties the original chapel's construction to a fisherman who reported seeing a mysterious light glowing from the clifftop on repeated nights, leading to the discovery of a religious icon at the site.
Since the film's 2008 release, Skopelos has become widely known internationally as the Mamma Mia Island, and guided tours now take visitors between the chapel, Kastani Beach, and other filming locations across the island, connecting Skopelos's pine-covered coastline to Skiathos nearby, where several other scenes were shot.
