What Is Thassos Known For?

Thassos supplied marble for temples and monuments across the ancient Mediterranean, and the quarry that produced most of it operated continuously for over a thousand years before finally shutting down.

Thassos is known first for that marble, prized since antiquity for its exceptional purity and near translucent white color. Classified as dolomitic marble, it reflects light more effectively than most other white stone, a quality that made it especially valuable for sculpture and architecture. Settlers from Paros arrived on the island around the 7th century BC to exploit its natural resources, and the Aliki quarry, on the island's southeastern coast, began extraction that same century and continued nearly without interruption for more than 1,200 years, only abandoned during Slavic invasions in the 7th century AD. Marble from Thassos traveled throughout the ancient world, reaching Rome, Egypt, and Persia to decorate palaces, temples, and tombs, and much of the old quarry now sits submerged just offshore, still visible beneath the water at Aliki today.

The island is equally known for its gold, which initially drew Phoenician traders to Thassos around 680 BC before they recognized the marble's own value and helped establish trade routes carrying it further afield. That combined mineral wealth gave ancient Thassos real regional standing, earning it the nickname Athens of the North, and its strategic position on trade routes linking Anatolia to central Greece made the island a repeated target for invasion by Athenians, Spartans, Persians, and eventually Romans throughout antiquity.

Around ten marble quarries still operate on Thassos today, keeping the island among Greece's leading producers of the stone, and connecting its ancient mineral wealth to Kavala and Samothrace across the northern Aegean.
