What Is Thessaloniki Known For?

Thessaloniki carries more layered history in one waterfront tower than most cities pack into an entire old town, and that tower alone tells much of the story of who's ruled here.

Thessaloniki is known first for the White Tower, a 15th century Ottoman structure built over an earlier Byzantine fortification to defend the harbor. For much of its history it carried a far grimmer name, the Tower of Blood, given its use as a prison and execution site under Ottoman rule, and only after Greece regained the city in 1912 was the tower whitewashed, both literally and symbolically, becoming the emblem it's known as today.

That single monument reflects a much larger reputation. Thessaloniki holds one of the richest concentrations of Byzantine monuments in Greece, including UNESCO-listed sites like the Rotunda and the Church of Agios Dimitrios, dating back to a period when the city rivaled Constantinople itself in wealth and influence. Founded around 316 BC by Cassander, King of Macedonia, who named it after his wife, the half-sister of Alexander the Great, the city's roots run deeper still, and a statue of Alexander stands along the modern seafront in tribute to that connection.

Thessaloniki is also known for the layered, multicultural population that shaped it for centuries, with Greek, Turkish, and Jewish communities living side by side, and before the Second World War, Jewish residents made up as much as half the city's population.

Food culture rounds out the city's reputation just as strongly, with bougatsa, souvlaki, and a food scene shaped by that long multicultural history giving Thessaloniki a claim as one of the country's most serious culinary cities, and its position on the Thermaic Gulf, close to the beaches of Chalkidiki, adds a coastal identity to a city defined mostly by what's been built on land.
