What Is Volos Known For?
Volos carries one of the oldest stories in Greek mythology right in its harbor, and the city still keeps that legend visible in a way few places manage.
Volos is known first as the ancient city of Iolcus, hometown of Jason and the launching point for the Argonauts' voyage to Colchis in search of the Golden Fleece. According to the myth, Jason grew up hidden on nearby Mount Pelion under the tutelage of Chiron, a centaur, and once he reached adulthood, the ship Argo was built from Pelion timber and set sail from Volos's own harbor with fifty of Greece's finest heroes aboard. A full-scale replica of the Argo still floats in the city's harbor each summer, standing as Volos's unofficial symbol and giving visitors a direct, physical connection to the myth.
That mythology extends into the surrounding landscape too. Mount Pelion, rising just outside the city, carries its own reputation as the mountain of the centaurs, and the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, the event mythology credits with sparking the judgment of Paris and eventually the Trojan War, is said to have taken place in its forests.
Volos is known just as strongly for real archaeological depth, since the nearby sites of Sesklo and Dimini rank among the most significant Neolithic settlements in Europe, with Sesklo dating back to around 6000 BC and considered the oldest organized settlement on the continent. Dimini, from the later Neolithic period, remains one of the most studied prehistoric sites in Greece.
Beyond myth and archaeology, Volos is known for its tsipouro culture, the anise-free spirit typically served alongside small mezes plates, and for the university energy that keeps its waterfront and squares active well into the evening.
