Where Should I Stay in Kavala?

Kavala splits mainly between the old town on the hill and the newer waterfront below it, and the choice comes down to atmosphere versus convenience.

Kavala's old town, Panagia, sits on its own peninsula east of the port, with cobbled lanes, wooden balconies, and boutique hotels set in restored mansions near the fortress and the Imaret. It gives the most immersive base for anyone drawn to the city's Byzantine and Ottoman layers, though the narrow streets make a car more trouble than it's worth, and parking works better near Mohamed Ali Square at the edge of the district.

The new town below, along the harbor and the coastal pedestrian zone, gives easier access to restaurants, shops, and the ferry terminal, and it suits travelers who want to be close to transport links or who'd rather skip the steep walk up into Panagia each evening.

For families or anyone prioritizing beach time, staying slightly outside the center toward the city's own beaches gives more space and a quieter setting, with the old town and harbor still an easy drive away.

Once a base is decided, hotels and places to stay in Kavala span the old town, the waterfront, and the beach areas nearby, so the choice really comes down to atmosphere versus ease of movement.

Anyone continuing on to Thassos should check ferry schedules and book tickets ahead of a summer visit, since the crossing from nearby Keramoti runs frequently but fills up during peak season.

Panagia suits travelers who want the old town's history built directly into the stay, the new town suits anyone prioritizing convenience and ferry access, and the beach areas suit families or travelers wanting more space outside the center.
