Where Should I Stay in Volos?

Volos splits between the city itself and the mountain villages above it, and the right choice depends on whether waterfront convenience or Pelion's slower pace matters more.

Volos's own waterfront gives the most practical base, putting the promenade, the Archaeological Museum, and the city's tsipouradika all within an easy walk, and it works well for anyone flying or busing in and needing transport connections close by. This area also stays closest to the ferry port for anyone continuing on to the Sporades.

Makrinitsa and Portaria, the mountain villages a short drive above the city, trade waterfront access for traditional stone architecture, shaded squares, and views back down over the gulf. These suit travelers who want to feel like they've properly left the city behind while still keeping Volos itself within easy reach for a day trip.

Further into Pelion, coastal villages like Agios Ioannis and Damouchari on the eastern side give direct beach access and a genuinely different pace from either Volos or the mountain villages, though they sit far enough out that a car becomes essential rather than optional.

Once a base is decided, hotels and places to stay in and around Volos span all three areas, from the convenience of the waterfront to the villages and coastline further into Pelion.

Anyone continuing on to Skiathos or Skopelos should check ferry schedules and book tickets ahead of a summer visit, since Volos serves as the main mainland departure point for the Sporades.
