Getting from Aegina to Meteora

If you are heading to Meteora from Aegina you are making your way to one of the most extraordinary places in Greece, a complex of Byzantine monasteries built on top of rock pillars in the plain of Thessaly in central Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no ferry to Meteora. It is an inland destination with no sea connection. Getting there means taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then travelling by road or rail north to Kalambaka, the town at the base of the Meteora rocks.

Getting there by air

Meteora has no airport. The nearest town is Kalambaka, around 3.5 hours by road from Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and then driving or taking the bus to Kalambaka gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and drive or take the KTEL bus to Kalambaka. Note that as of 2026 the direct Athens to Kalambaka train service is suspended due to track repairs, with restoration expected in late 2026 to mid-2027. The KTEL express bus from Athens Liosion terminal to Kalambaka takes around 4.5 hours and is currently the most practical public transport option. If you are travelling with a car, the ferry from Aegina already puts you at Piraeus with your vehicle, then drive northwest to Kalambaka via the E65 motorway, which takes around 3.5 hours.
