Getting from Aegina to Monemvasia

If you are heading to Monemvasia from Aegina you are making your way to a medieval fortress town on the southeastern Peloponnese coast, built entirely on a massive rock connected to the mainland by a single causeway with Byzantine churches and narrow lanes that have changed little in centuries.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Monemvasia. Monemvasia is accessible only by road. The most practical approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then travel by road south through the Peloponnese to Monemvasia, which takes around 4 hours from Athens via Corinth, Tripoli and Sparta.

Getting there by air

Monemvasia has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and then driving or taking the KTEL bus to Monemvasia gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and drive or take the KTEL bus to Monemvasia. The KTEL bus from Athens Kifissos terminal runs several times daily and takes around 4.5 hours. If you are travelling with a car, the ferry from Aegina already puts you at Piraeus with your vehicle, then drive south through the Peloponnese to Monemvasia.
