Getting from Aegina to Skyros

If you are heading to Skyros from Aegina you are making your way to the most remote of the Sporades group, in the northern Aegean. It has two completely different landscapes, a dramatic hilltop Chora and a wild volcanic south, with its own native horse breed and one of the most extraordinary carnival traditions in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Skyros. Skyros is connected to the mainland only via Kymi, a port on the eastern coast of Evia around 2.5 hours by road from Athens. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then travel by road to Kymi for the ferry to Skyros, which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes and runs 1 to 2 times daily.

Getting there by air

Skyros has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Skyros takes around 40 minutes in the air. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours. Check the Athens to Skyros schedule carefully as the service runs a limited number of times per week.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and fly to Skyros. It is the most time efficient approach. If you are travelling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and drive to Kymi for the ferry across to Skyros.
