Getting from Agathonisi to Astypalaia

If you are heading to Astypalaia from Agathonisi you are making your way to a butterfly-shaped island sitting between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. It has a Chora topped by a Venetian castle that is one of the finest in the Aegean.

Take the ferry

There is a direct seasonal ferry from Agathonisi to Astypalaia running a few times a week in summer, taking around 5 hours. The route is not year-round so check the schedule before planning around it. Outside of the summer season the connection goes via Kos or Rhodes.

Getting there by air

Astypalaia has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Astypalaia, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Check the schedule carefully as flights run a limited number of times per week.

Your best option

Take the direct seasonal ferry from Agathonisi when it is running. It connects the two islands without going through Athens and is the most practical approach in summer. If the ferry is not running for your dates, take the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos and fly to Astypalaia via Athens.
