Getting from Agathonisi to Igoumenitsa

If you are heading to Igoumenitsa from Agathonisi you are making your way from the northern Dodecanese group to a city on the Epirus coast in the northwestern part of Greece, facing the Ionian Sea with a backdrop of mountains and easy access to some of the finest landscapes in the country.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agathonisi to Igoumenitsa. The two are on opposite sides of Greece with no sea connection between them. Getting there means taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then either flying to Ioannina and taking the bus to Igoumenitsa, which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, or travelling by road from Athens to Igoumenitsa, which takes around 5 to 6 hours.

Getting there by air

Igoumenitsa has no airport. The nearest airport is Ioannina, around 83 kilometres to the east. Taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Ioannina, followed by a bus or taxi to Igoumenitsa, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Take the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, fly to Athens and then fly to Ioannina and take the bus or taxi to Igoumenitsa. It is the fastest and most practical approach from Agathonisi.
