Getting from Agathonisi to Kalymnos

If you are heading to Kalymnos from Agathonisi you are making your way to an island further south in the Dodecanese group, known above all for its sponge diving tradition and its status as one of the premier rock climbing destinations in Europe.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Agathonisi to Kalymnos running up to 4 times a week year-round. The fastest service takes around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, while the slower vessel via Lipsi and Leros takes around 5 hours 30 minutes. It is one of the most practical connections within the Dodecanese network and avoids going through Athens entirely. Check the schedule before planning around it and build your travel dates around the available departures.

Getting there by air

Kalymnos has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Kalymnos gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Alternatively, fly to Kos and take the short ferry from Mastichari to Kalymnos, which takes around 30 to 45 minutes.

Your best option

Take the direct ferry from Agathonisi to Kalymnos on the faster vessel. At around 1 hour 45 minutes it is a manageable trip and keeps the journey within the Dodecanese without going through Athens. Check the schedule in advance as the frequency varies by season.
