Getting from Agathonisi to Volos

If you are heading to Volos from Agathonisi you are making your way from the northern Dodecanese group to a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula in Thessaly. It is the departure point for ferries to the Sporades and has a long waterfront lined with ouzo bars and seafood restaurants.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agathonisi to Volos. Getting there means taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then either driving or taking the bus to Volos, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours from Athens. The KTEL bus from Athens to Volos runs several times daily and takes around 3.5 hours.

Getting there by air

Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos, around 20 kilometres from the city, with limited connections from Athens. Taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then either flying to Nea Anchialos or driving to Volos gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, fly to Athens and drive or take the KTEL bus to Volos. It is the most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car, fly to Athens, rent a car and drive north to Volos via the E75 motorway.
