Getting from Alexandroupoli to Ioannina

If you are heading to Ioannina from Alexandroupoli you are making your way from the far northeastern corner of Greece to a city in the mountains of Epirus in the northwestern part of the country, on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis with the Pindos range behind it and the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world, an hour away.

 

Take the ferry

There is no ferry connection between Alexandroupoli and Ioannina. Ioannina is an inland city with no sea access. Getting there means traveling entirely by road or air across northern Greece.

Both Alexandroupoli and Ioannina have airports with connections from Athens. Direct flights between Alexandroupoli and Ioannina run up to 4 times a day, taking around 1 hour in the air via Athens. It is the fastest approach. Total travel time door to door is around 3 to 4 hours.

 

Your best option

Fly from Alexandroupoli to Ioannina via Athens. It is the most practical approach for most travelers. The drive from Alexandroupoli to Ioannina via the Egnatia motorway takes around 5.5 to 6 hours and is a genuinely scenic route across northern Greece. The KTEL bus connects the two cities via Thessaloniki and takes around 8 to 8.5 hours, which is worth considering if you want to travel by land and have the time.
