Getting from Alonissos to Kalamata

If you are heading to Kalamata from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to the capital of Messenia in the southern Peloponnese, with a renovated waterfront, good food and easy access to the Mani peninsula and the Byzantine ruins of Mystras.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alonissos to Kalamata. Getting there means taking the ferry from Alonissos to Volos or Skiathos and then traveling by road south through Athens and the Peloponnese to Kalamata, which takes around 2.5 to 3 hours from Athens via Corinth and Tripoli.

Getting there by air

Kalamata has an international airport with connections from Athens and Thessaloniki. Alonissos has no airport. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and flying directly to Kalamata via Thessaloniki avoids Athens in summer when direct services operate. Flying via Athens gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and fly to Kalamata via Athens or Thessaloniki. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos, drive to Athens and then continue south through the Peloponnese to Kalamata.
