Getting from Alonissos to Kos

If you are heading to Kos from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to one of the most popular islands in the Dodecanese group, on the opposite side of Greece. It is the birthplace of Hippocrates, with good beaches, a lively town and ancient ruins that are among the finest in the eastern Aegean.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alonissos to Kos. The two islands are in completely different parts of Greece with no sea connection between them. Getting there means taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos, flying to Athens and then flying to Kos, or taking the ferry to Volos, driving to Piraeus and boarding the overnight Piraeus to Kos ferry, which takes around 12 to 15 hours.

Getting there by air

Kos has an international airport with daily connections from Athens and Thessaloniki. Alonissos has no airport. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and flying to Kos via Thessaloniki avoids Athens entirely in summer when direct services operate. Flying via Athens gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and fly to Kos via Athens or Thessaloniki. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos, drive to Piraeus and board the overnight Piraeus to Kos ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in the morning.
