Getting from Alonissos to Rhodes

If you are heading to Rhodes from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to the largest island in the Dodecanese group, on the opposite side of Greece. It has a medieval walled city built by the Knights of Saint John that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alonissos to Rhodes. The two islands are in completely different parts of Greece with no sea connection between them. Getting there means taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos, flying to Athens and then flying to Rhodes, or taking the ferry to Volos, driving to Piraeus and boarding the overnight Piraeus to Rhodes ferry, which takes around 12 to 18 hours.

Getting there by air

Rhodes has an international airport with daily connections from Athens and Thessaloniki. Alonissos has no airport. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and flying to Rhodes via Thessaloniki avoids Athens entirely in summer when direct services operate. Flying via Athens gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and fly to Rhodes via Athens or Thessaloniki. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos, drive to Piraeus and board the overnight Piraeus to Rhodes ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in the morning.
