Getting from Alonissos to Koufonisia

If you are heading to Koufonisia from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to one of the Small Cyclades, on the opposite side of the Aegean. The two island groups are in completely different parts of Greece and the journey requires going through Athens.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alonissos to Koufonisia. The two islands are in different island groups with no sea connection between them. Getting there means taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos or Volos and then traveling by road to Athens, before either flying or taking the Piraeus to Koufonisia ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours. Alternatively, take the ferry to Skiathos, fly to Athens and then fly to Naxos, followed by the short local ferry to Koufonisia taking around 45 minutes.

Getting there by air

Koufonisia has no airport. The nearest airport is Naxos. Alonissos has no airport either. The nearest airport is Skiathos. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Naxos, followed by the short ferry to Koufonisia, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos, fly to Athens and then fly to Naxos and take the local ferry across to Koufonisia. It is the most time efficient approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos and drive to Piraeus for the Piraeus to Koufonisia ferry.
