Getting from Alonissos to Lesvos

If you are heading to Lesvos from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to the third largest island in Greece, in the northeastern Aegean. It is the birthplace of Sappho, an island of olive groves, ouzo distilleries and a capital at Mytilini with a Byzantine castle and one of the most enjoyable waterfronts in the northern Aegean.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alonissos to Lesvos. The two islands are in different parts of the Aegean with no sea connection between them. Getting there means taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos, flying to Athens and then flying to Lesvos, or taking the ferry to Volos, driving to Piraeus and boarding the overnight Piraeus to Lesvos ferry, which takes around 10 to 14 hours.

Getting there by air

Lesvos has its own airport with daily connections from Athens and Thessaloniki. Alonissos has no airport. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and flying to Lesvos via Thessaloniki avoids Athens entirely in summer when direct services operate. Flying via Athens gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and fly to Lesvos via Thessaloniki or Athens. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos, drive to Piraeus and board the overnight Piraeus to Lesvos ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in the morning.
