Getting from Andros to Kea

If you are heading to Kea from Andros you are making your way from the northernmost island in the Cyclades to the closest Cycladic island to Athens, on the western side of the group. It has good beaches, a quiet Chora and an ancient stone lion carved into the hillside that is one of the more unusual monuments in the Cyclades.

Take the ferry

There is a seasonal direct ferry from Andros to Kea running in summer on the wider Cyclades route. The journey takes around 6 to 9 hours with stops along the way. The more practical approach is to take the ferry from Andros to Rafina, which runs up to 11 times daily and takes around 1 to 2 hours, and then take a taxi to Lavrio, around 25 kilometres from Rafina, for the ferry to Kea taking around 1 hour and running up to 7 times daily in summer.

Getting there by air

Kea has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens International, around 30 kilometres from Lavrio. Andros has no airport either. Taking the ferry from Andros to Rafina and then a taxi to Lavrio for the ferry to Kea gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours without flying at all. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Andros to Rafina and take a taxi to Lavrio for the ferry across to Kea. It is one of the most convenient island to island connections in the Cyclades and avoids Athens entirely. If you are traveling with a car, the ferry from Andros already puts you at Rafina with your vehicle, then drive to Lavrio for the ferry across to Kea.
