Getting from Antipaxos to Volos

If you are heading to Volos from Antipaxos you are making your way from a tiny island in the Ionian Sea to a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula in Thessaly. It is the departure point for ferries to the Sporades and has a long waterfront lined with ouzo bars and seafood restaurants.

Take the ferry

There are no scheduled ferries from Antipaxos to Volos. Antipaxos has no ferry port of its own and is accessible only by sea taxi from Gaios on Paxos. Getting to Volos means taking the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry from Paxos to Igoumenitsa and then driving or taking the bus east across northern Greece to Volos, which takes around 4 to 5 hours from Igoumenitsa via Ioannina and the E65 motorway.

Getting there by air

Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos, around 20 kilometres from the city, with limited connections from Athens. Antipaxos has no airport either. The nearest airport is Corfu. Taking the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry from Paxos to Corfu and flying to Athens, then driving or taking the KTEL bus to Volos, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours from Athens, gives a total journey time of around 7 to 8 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry from Paxos to Igoumenitsa and drive east to Volos via the Egnatia motorway and E65. It is a scenic route across northern and central Greece and avoids Athens entirely. If you are traveling with a car, this is the most direct approach. If you prefer not to drive, take the sea taxi from Antipaxos to Paxos, the ferry to Corfu, fly to Athens and take the KTEL bus to Volos.
