Getting from Arki to Ioannina

If you are heading to Ioannina from Arki you are making your way from one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Dodecanese to a city in the mountains of Epirus in northwestern Greece, on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis with the Pindos range behind it and the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world, an hour away.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Arki to Ioannina. Ioannina is an inland city with no sea connection. Arki is connected to Patmos, Leros, Lipsi, Kalymnos and occasionally Rhodes and Samos, with services running a limited number of times per week. Getting to Ioannina means taking the ferry from Arki to Leros or Patmos, flying to Athens and then flying to Ioannina. Alternatively take the ferry from Arki through the Dodecanese network to Piraeus and then travel by road to Ioannina, which takes around 5 to 6 hours from Athens.

Getting there by air

Ioannina has its own airport with connections from Athens. Arki has no airport. The nearest airports are Leros and Kos. Taking the local ferry from Arki to Leros, flying to Athens and then Athens to Ioannina gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. The airport is just 4 kilometres from the city centre. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the local ferry from Arki to Leros, fly to Athens and then fly to Ioannina. It is the most practical approach. Check the ferry schedule from Arki carefully before booking your flights as services run only a limited number of times per week and your departure dates need to align. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Arki to Piraeus and drive northwest via the E65 motorway to Ioannina, which takes around 5 to 6 hours from Athens.
