Getting from Astakos to Corfu

If you are heading to Corfu from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to the northwestern part of Greece, an island in the Ionian Sea with a UNESCO World Heritage Site town and a lush green coastline. The two are on the same western Greek coast making this one of the more natural connections from Astakos.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Corfu. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. The only mainland ferry connection to Corfu departs from Igoumenitsa. Getting to Corfu means driving north from Astakos to Igoumenitsa, which takes around 2.5 to 3 hours via Arta and Ioannina, and then taking the short ferry from Igoumenitsa to Corfu taking around 1 hour 30 minutes. It is a natural and practical connection that avoids Athens entirely.

Getting there by air

Corfu has an international airport with daily connections from Athens. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos north to Igoumenitsa and taking the ferry to Corfu is considerably more practical than flying for this connection and avoids Athens entirely. Total journey time is around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Astakos north to Igoumenitsa and take the ferry across to Corfu. It is the most natural and direct approach and avoids Athens entirely. At around 1 hour 30 minutes the Igoumenitsa to Corfu crossing is short and runs multiple times daily. If you are traveling with a car the ferry takes your vehicle directly to Corfu giving you the freedom to explore the coastline and interior villages.
