Getting from Astypalaia to Agathonisi

If you are heading to Agathonisi from Astypalaia you are making your way from a butterfly-shaped island between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese to one of the most remote islands in the Dodecanese group, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has almost no tourist infrastructure and an atmosphere of complete isolation.

Take the ferry

There is a seasonal direct ferry from Astypalaia to Agathonisi running in summer on the wider Blue Star route that connects Astypalaia with the northern Dodecanese. The service runs a limited number of times per week and takes several hours with stops along the way. Alternatively take the ferry from Astypalaia to Leros and then the local ferry to Agathonisi, which runs 3 to 5 times a week and takes around 1 to 2 hours.

Getting there by air

Agathonisi has no airport. The nearest airports are Leros and Samos. Astypalaia has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Astypalaia to Athens and then Athens to Leros or Samos, followed by the local ferry to Agathonisi, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Fly from Astypalaia to Athens and then fly to Leros or Samos and take the local ferry across to Agathonisi. Check the ferry schedule before booking your flights as the service runs a limited number of times per week. Build flexibility into your plans as Agathonisi is not the easiest island to leave in a hurry. If you prefer to travel by sea, check whether the seasonal direct ferry from Astypalaia aligns with your dates as it avoids Athens entirely.
