Getting from Astypalaia to Amorgos

If you are heading to Amorgos from Astypalaia you are making your way from a butterfly-shaped island between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese to the most eastern of the Cyclades, relatively close in geographic terms. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.

Take the ferry

There is a seasonal direct ferry from Astypalaia to Amorgos running in summer on the wider Blue Star route. The service runs a limited number of times per week and takes around 3 to 6 hours depending on the vessel and stops. It is one of the most natural connections from Astypalaia into the eastern Cyclades and avoids going through Athens entirely. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation as the road between them takes around 30 minutes.

Getting there by air

Amorgos has no airport. The nearest airports are Naxos and Santorini. Astypalaia has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Astypalaia to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry gives a total journey time of around 8 to 10 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the seasonal direct ferry from Astypalaia to Amorgos when the schedule works for your dates. It is the most natural and enjoyable connection and avoids Athens entirely. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Astypalaia to Piraeus and board the conventional Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
