Getting from Astypalaia to Athens

If you are heading to Athens from Astypalaia you are making your way from a butterfly-shaped island between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese to the capital of Greece and the gateway to everything it connects to.

 

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Astypalaia to Piraeus running around 5 times a week, taking around 8 to 12 hours depending on the vessel and route. The conventional Blue Star ferry is comfortable with cabins available and arrives in the morning. From Piraeus the metro takes around 20 minutes to central Athens. The faster alternative is to fly from Astypalaia to Athens, which takes around 1 hour in the air.

 

Getting there by air

Astypalaia has its own small airport with daily connections from Athens. The flight takes around 1 hour and is the most practical approach for most travelers. Total journey time from port to city centre is around 2 to 3 hours including transfer to Athens from the airport.

 

Your best option

Fly from Astypalaia to Athens. It is the fastest and most practical approach at around 1 hour in the air. If you are in no hurry or are traveling with a car, the overnight ferry from Astypalaia to Piraeus is comfortable, saves a night's accommodation and delivers you to the port in the morning with the day ahead. The conventional ferry is the only realistic option for travelers with a vehicle.
