Getting from Astypalaia to Piraeus

If you are heading to Piraeus from Astypalaia you are making your way from a butterfly-shaped island between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese to the largest port in Greece and the gateway to Athens and the wider ferry network.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Astypalaia to Piraeus running around 5 times a week, taking around 8 to 12 hours depending on the vessel and route. The conventional Blue Star ferry is comfortable with cabins available and arrives in the morning. From Piraeus the metro takes around 20 minutes to central Athens. The faster alternative is to fly from Astypalaia to Athens and then take the metro or taxi to Piraeus, which takes around 20 to 45 minutes from Athens Airport.

Getting there by air

Piraeus has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens International, around 45 kilometres to the east. Astypalaia has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Astypalaia to Athens and then taking the metro or taxi to Piraeus gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours and is considerably faster than the direct ferry.

Your best option

Take the direct overnight ferry from Astypalaia to Piraeus if you are not in a hurry or are traveling with a car. It is comfortable and delivers you directly to the port in the morning ready to connect to the rest of the network. If speed matters, fly from Astypalaia to Athens and take the metro directly to Piraeus. If you are traveling with a car, the direct ferry is the only realistic option as it takes your vehicle directly to the port.
