Getting from Athens to Ios

If you are heading to Ios from Athens you are going to one of the most enjoyable islands in the Cyclades. Ios has a reputation built largely around its nightlife, which is real and lively and concentrated in the Chora above the port, but the island has considerably more to it than that. The beaches on the south coast, particularly Mylopotas, are among the finest in the Cyclades. The landscape is bare and beautiful in the way of the southern Cyclades and the sunsets from the Chora are exceptional. Homer is said to be buried on the island, and the grave is up in the hills north of the Chora for those who want to find it.

Take the ferry

The Piraeus to Ios ferry is well served year-round with multiple daily crossings in summer. Fast ferries cover the distance in around 4 to 5 hours and conventional vessels take around 7 to 8 hours. The overnight Blue Star crossing from Piraeus is a good option, leaving in the evening and arriving in the morning with the whole day ahead of you. Ferries also run from Rafina and Lavrio in summer, which are useful if you are coming directly from Athens Airport. Book ahead in July and August.

Getting there by air

Ios has no airport. The ferry is the only option from Athens.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Piraeus. The fast boat at around 4 to 5 hours is manageable as a daytime crossing. The overnight Blue Star is worth considering if you want to maximise time on the island and save a night's accommodation. Check Ferryhopper for the day's schedule and book ahead in peak summer.
