Getting from Athens to Poros

If you are heading to Poros from Athens you are making one of the easiest and most rewarding short trips from the capital. Poros sits just 200 metres from the Peloponnese mainland town of Galatas, close enough that you can hear voices across the water, and the narrow channel between them creates one of the most charming harbour settings in Greece. The island is small and easy to explore, with a clocktower above the town that is the landmark, a naval base that gives the port a particular character and views back across to the mountains of the Peloponnese that change through the day. It is also a practical base for visiting Epidaurus, one of the finest ancient theatres in the world, which is 40 minutes by road from Galatas on the other side of the channel.

Take the ferry

The Piraeus to Poros ferry is one of the classic Saronic crossings. Hellenic Seaways and Aegean Flying Dolphins operate the route with up to 6 daily departures year-round, taking around 50 minutes to just over an hour on the high-speed vessels. Conventional ferries take around 2.5 hours. The crossing is frequent enough that you rarely need to book in advance except on summer weekends when Athenians head out in numbers.

Getting there by air

Poros has no airport. The ferry is the only option and at under an hour on the fast boat it is one of the most effortless connections from Athens in Greece.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Piraeus. It is fast, frequent and the crossing through the Saronic Gulf is a pleasure. If you are driving from Athens, the alternative is to take the road south through the Peloponnese to Galatas and cross to Poros on the short local boat from there.
