Getting from Athens to Sikinos

If you are heading to Sikinos from Athens you are going to one of the least visited islands in the Cyclades and one of the most rewarding for exactly that reason. Sikinos sits between Folegandros and Ios, small and hilly, with a Chora perched on a ridge above the port that looks out over the Aegean in both directions. The island has an ancient monastery converted from a Roman mausoleum, one of the most unusual monuments in the Cyclades, and a coastline of quiet beaches that see almost no crowds. The port of Alopronia is one of the prettiest small harbours in the group. Sikinos is not a place you go to for anything in particular. You go to slow down entirely.

Take the ferry

The Piraeus to Sikinos ferry runs several times a week in summer and less frequently in winter, taking around 6 to 8 hours depending on the vessel and the stops along the way. Most sailings stop at Folegandros or Milos along the route. The frequency is limited so check the schedule on Ferryhopper before booking and build your travel dates around the available departures.

Getting there by air

Sikinos has no airport. The ferry from Piraeus is the only option from Athens.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Piraeus. Check the schedule in advance as the limited frequency means your dates need to align with the departures. The crossing via the southern Cyclades is a good one and arriving into the small harbour at Alopronia is one of the quieter pleasures of the group. Give yourself at least two nights on Sikinos.
