Getting from Elafonisos to Dokos
If you are heading to Dokos from Elafonisos you are making your way from a small island off the southern Peloponnese coast to an uninhabited rocky island in the Saronic Gulf between Hydra and the Peloponnese coast, relatively close in geographic terms given both sit on the eastern side of the Peloponnese. The waters around Dokos hold the oldest known shipwreck in the world, dating to around 2700 BC.
Take the ferry
Elafonisos has no ferry connection to the wider Greek ferry network. The only ferry from Elafonisos is the short 10 minute crossing to Pounta on the southern Peloponnese, which runs every 30 minutes in summer. Dokos is accessible only by water taxi from Hydra, taking around 30 minutes. Getting there means taking the ferry from Elafonisos to Pounta, driving north through the Peloponnese to Ermioni or the Saronic coast, and arranging a water taxi to Dokos. Alternatively drive to Piraeus and take the Saronic ferry to Hydra, followed by a water taxi to Dokos.
Getting there by air
Dokos has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Elafonisos has no airport. Taking the ferry from Elafonisos to Pounta, driving north to Piraeus and taking the Saronic ferry to Hydra, followed by a water taxi to Dokos, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the ferry from Elafonisos to Pounta, drive north to Piraeus and take the Saronic ferry to Hydra, then arrange a water taxi from the harbour across to Dokos. Pre-arrange your water taxi to Dokos before leaving Hydra as you cannot hail a boat once you are on the island. Having a car is helpful for the Pounta to Piraeus leg. Come entirely self-sufficient as there is nothing on Dokos.
