Getting from Santorini to Alexandroupoli

If you are heading to Alexandroupoli from Santorini you are making your way to the far northeastern corner of Greece, a city on the Thracian coast close to the Turkish border with a character shaped by its position at the edge of multiple worlds. The waterfront is pleasant, the old lighthouse is a landmark and the surrounding region of Thrace is one of the most fascinating and least visited parts of the country. The Dadia Forest Reserve to the north is one of the finest raptor sanctuaries in Europe. The Evros River delta on the Turkish border is a significant wetland and bird migration site. Alexandroupoli also serves as the gateway to Samothrace, with ferries to the island departing from its port daily in summer.

Take the ferry

There is no ferry from Santorini to Alexandroupoli. The city is a mainland port on the northern Aegean coast and is not connected to the Cyclades ferry network. Getting there by sea is not a practical option.

What about flying?

Both Santorini and Alexandroupoli have airports. Google Flights confirms direct flights between the two, making this a surprisingly straightforward connection. The journey goes Santorini to Athens and then Athens to Alexandroupoli with Aegean Airlines or Sky Express, with total travel time around 4 to 5 hours. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

Fly via Athens. It is the only practical option and the connection is easy. If you are planning to visit Samothrace while you are in the region, ferries to the island depart from Alexandroupoli port daily in summer with the crossing taking around 1 hour 45 minutes.
