Getting from Santorini to Astypalaia
Astypalaia is one of the most beautiful and most undervisited islands in Greece, sitting in an unusual geographical position between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese that gives it a character blending both groups. The island is shaped like a butterfly, two rocky wings joined by a narrow causeway, and the Chora above the main port is one of the finest in the Aegean, a cascade of whitewashed houses topped by a Venetian castle that lights up at night. The beaches around the island are excellent and largely uncrowded. Astypalaia has been steadily attracting a more discerning crowd in recent years but still feels genuinely off the mainstream circuit.
Take the ferry
There is a seasonal direct ferry from Santorini to Astypalaia operated by Blue Star Ferries, running once a week during the summer months. The crossing takes around 2 hours 35 minutes, which makes it one of the shorter inter-island hops available on this route. The once-weekly frequency is the limiting factor so checking the schedule carefully and building your dates around the departure day is essential. Outside of the summer season the direct service does not run and you would need to connect via Piraeus or Naxos.
What about flying?
Astypalaia has its own small airport with domestic connections from Athens. The journey from Santorini goes Santorini to Athens and then Athens to Astypalaia, with total travel time around 4 to 5 hours. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.
Your best option
If the once-weekly Blue Star ferry timing works with your schedule, take it. A direct 2.5 hour crossing from Santorini to Astypalaia without going through Athens is genuinely good value in terms of time and experience. If the timing does not align, fly via Athens. Either way check Ferryhopper first as schedules are seasonal and dates matter.
