Getting from Santorini to Lavrio

Lavrio sits on the southeastern tip of Attica, around 60 kilometres from central Athens and around 35 kilometres from Athens Airport. It is the port closest to the airport and the departure point for ferries to Kea, Kythnos and several other Cyclades islands in summer. The ancient silver mines nearby financed the Athenian fleet that defeated the Persians at Salamis in 480 BC and are worth a visit. The town itself is a working port with a relaxed waterfront and fish restaurants that are considerably better than the port's reputation suggests.

Take the ferry

There is a seasonal direct ferry from Santorini to Lavrio, running from April to October with 1 to 2 daily crossings. The journey takes around 5 hours 20 minutes to 6 hours. Outside of the summer season the Lavrio service does not run and you would need to use Piraeus instead.

What about flying?

Lavrio has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens, around 35 kilometres to the northwest. Flying from Santorini to Athens and then travelling to Lavrio by taxi or bus gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours.

Your best option

Take the seasonal direct ferry when it is running. It is a clean, straightforward connection and Lavrio's proximity to Athens Airport makes it a practical arrival point for anyone continuing their journey from there. Check the schedule on Ferryhopper as the service is seasonal and runs April to October only.
