Getting from Symi to Amorgos

If you are heading to Amorgos from Symi you are making your way from one of the most beautiful harbour towns in the Dodecanese to the most eastern of the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Symi to Amorgos. Getting there by sea means taking the ferry from Symi to Rhodes, which takes around 50 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes and runs multiple times daily, and then boarding the overnight Piraeus to Rhodes ferry in reverse, arriving at Piraeus and then boarding the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation as the road between them takes around 30 minutes.

Getting there by air

Amorgos has no airport. The nearest airports are Naxos and Santorini. Symi has no airport. The nearest airport is Rhodes. Taking the ferry from Symi to Rhodes, flying from Rhodes to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry gives a total journey time of around 8 to 12 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Symi to Rhodes and fly from Rhodes to Athens, then take the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. It is the most practical approach. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm. Note that Symi is car-free so if you are traveling with a car it would already be in Rhodes, from where you can board the overnight Piraeus ferry in reverse and then board the conventional Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
