Getting from Thessaloniki to Mykonos

If you are heading to Mykonos from Thessaloniki you are making your way from the second largest city in Greece to the most cosmopolitan island in the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the country. It has a maze of whitewashed lanes above the port, long beaches on the south coast and some of the best beach clubs in Greece.

Getting there by air

Mykonos has an international airport with daily connections from Athens and seasonal direct flights from Thessaloniki in summer. When the direct service is running the flight takes around 55 minutes making it one of the most convenient connections from Thessaloniki to any Cycladic island. Check the schedule carefully as direct flights are seasonal. Alternatively fly from Thessaloniki to Athens and then Athens to Mykonos.

Take the train, bus or drive

Thessaloniki is connected to Athens by train, taking around 4 to 5 hours, and by KTEL bus, taking around 5 to 6 hours. From Athens the Rafina to Mykonos ferry runs up to 12 times daily in summer and takes around 2 to 2.5 hours on the fast catamaran. Rafina is a short taxi ride from Athens Airport and avoids crossing the city to Piraeus entirely. The drive from Thessaloniki to Rafina takes around 6 to 7 hours via the E75 motorway.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Thessaloniki to Mykonos. Getting there means traveling to Athens and then taking the ferry from Rafina or Piraeus to Mykonos.

Your best option

Fly directly from Thessaloniki to Mykonos when the seasonal service is running. It is the fastest and most practical approach. When direct flights are not available, fly from Thessaloniki to Athens and take the ferry from Rafina to Mykonos. Book ahead in July and August as both flight and ferry spaces fill up fast. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Thessaloniki to Piraeus via the E75 motorway and board the conventional Piraeus to Mykonos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the New Port.
