Getting from Thessaloniki to Syros

If you are heading to Syros from Thessaloniki you are making your way from the second largest city in Greece to the capital of the Cyclades, on the opposite side of the country. It has a neoclassical port city of grand mansions and an opera house modelled on La Scala that is one of the most distinctive urban environments in the Greek islands.

Getting there by air

Syros has a small domestic airport with limited connections from Athens. Thessaloniki has an international airport with daily connections to Athens. Flying from Thessaloniki to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Syros ferry, which runs up to 6 daily crossings in summer and takes around 2 hours on the fast boat, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. Flights to Syros are limited so the ferry from Piraeus is the more practical option after flying to Athens.

Take the train, bus or drive

Thessaloniki is connected to Athens by train, taking around 4 to 5 hours, and by KTEL bus, taking around 5 to 6 hours. From Athens the Piraeus to Syros ferry runs up to 6 daily crossings in summer. The drive from Thessaloniki to Piraeus takes around 5 to 6 hours via the E75 motorway. All three options suit travelers with a car as the conventional ferry takes vehicles directly to Ermoupolis port.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Thessaloniki to Syros. Getting there means traveling to Piraeus for the ferry to Syros.

Your best option

Fly from Thessaloniki to Athens and take the Piraeus to Syros ferry. At around 2 hours on the fast boat it is one of the quickest Cyclades connections from Athens. It is the most practical approach at around 5 to 6 hours total. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Thessaloniki to Piraeus via the E75 motorway and board the conventional Piraeus to Syros ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to Ermoupolis port.
