Getting from Zakynthos to Meteora
If you are heading to Meteora from Zakynthos you are making your way to one of the most extraordinary places in Greece, a complex of Byzantine monasteries built on top of rock pillars in the plain of Thessaly in central Greece.
Take the ferry
There is no ferry to Meteora. It is an inland destination with no sea connection. Getting there from Zakynthos means taking the bus and ferry combination from Zakynthos to the mainland and then travelling north to Kalambaka, the town at the base of the Meteora rocks.
Getting there by air
Meteora has no airport. The most practical approach by air is to fly from Zakynthos to Athens and then drive or take the bus to Kalambaka, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours from Athens. Note that as of 2026 the direct train service between Athens and Kalambaka remains suspended following storm damage to the line, so the bus is currently the main public transport option.
Your best option
Take the KTEL bus and ferry combination from Zakynthos via Lamia to Trikala and then connect to Kalambaka. The total journey takes around 8 to 9 hours and is the most direct approach without flying. If you are travelling with a car, take the ferry from Zakynthos to Kyllini and drive to Kalambaka via the E65 motorway, which takes around 5 to 6 hours in total.
