About George Dalaras

Early Life

George Dalaras was born on September 29, 1949, in Nea Kokkinia, Piraeus, into a family of musicians. His father, Loukas Daralas, was a well-known rebetiko performer and bouzouki player, and his grandfather, from Thessaly, played Byzantine music on the violi, a traditional fiddle; nearly all the men in the family became musicians. Dalaras, who inverted the third and fifth letters of his surname to form his stage name, played guitar and sang at Piraeus's bouzoukia as a teenager, making his recording debut in 1965 on his father's rendition of "Wry Thorn."

Musical Style & Sound

Dalaras performs across laïko, rebetiko, éntekhno, traditional folk, Byzantine, and even Latin American and flamenco styles, having learned rudimentary Spanish to record with collaborators like guitarist Al Di Meola. Often called "the Greek Bruce Springsteen," he became famous early in his career for reviving rebetiko, Greek urban blues music, and has remained known throughout his career for political conviction and social commitment expressed through his music.

Career Rise

Dalaras released his first single, "Prosmoni" ("Anticipation"), in 1967, a song with indirect political references that was immediately banned by Greece's ruling military junta. His 1968 debut album, "The Station," became a major hit, launching a career that would eventually span more than 65 solo albums and appearances on over 140 additional recordings as performer, musician, or producer. In 1972, his album "Mikra Asia" ("Asia Minor"), recorded with singer Haris Alexiou, went gold, marking his first major breakthrough. Following the junta's collapse in 1975, his album "Rembetiko" is widely credited with reviving Greek underground music. He collaborated with composer Mikis Theodorakis on "Eighteen Little Songs for the Bitter Homeland," based on poems by Yiannis Ritsos, and his 1979 single "Paraponemena Logia" became a generational anthem. In 1983, he performed two sold-out concerts at Athens's Olympic Stadium to crowds exceeding 80,000 nightly. Over his career, he has sold more than 12 million albums and collaborated internationally with artists including Sting, Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola, Goran Bregović, and Yasmin Levy.

Diaspora Impact

Dalaras has performed at some of the world's most legendary venues, including Paris's Olympia Theatre and New York's Radio City Music Hall, giving him deep international reach among Greek diaspora audiences. He was named a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency and won the John F. Kennedy Award for humanitarian work, and his concerts addressing the Cyprus dispute helped raise global awareness of issues directly tied to diaspora communities.
