About Giannis Parios

Early Life

Giannis Parios, born Giannis Varthakouris on March 8, 1946, on the island of Paros, took his stage name from his home island. To support himself as a young man, he worked at the Saronis hotel in Athens, located directly across from the nightclub Neraida, where established performers Tzeni Vanou and Giannis Vogiatzis were singing. It was there that Kostas Klavvas, the club's musical director, discovered him and recognized his talent, encouraging him to study under composer Giorgos Katsaros.

Musical Style & Sound

Parios became known as "the singer of love," one of the most popular interpreters of elafrolaïko, a lighter, more melodic strand of Laïko song. In the 1980s, he began performing nisiotika, Greek island folk music tied to his own Aegean roots, and albums built around that style went on to become some of the best-selling releases in the history of Greek recorded music. In 1976, he became the first Greek singer to record a version of Alain Barrière's "Tu T'en Vas," reflecting a career built on bridging popular Greek song with broader musical influences.

Career Rise

Parios made his recording debut in 1969 at age twenty-three with five songs released on 45 RPM singles. His first full album, a self-titled 1971 release compiling songs from 1969 and 1970, was followed by his second LP, "Ti Theleis Na Kano," in 1972. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, he worked with major Greek composers and lyricists including Manos Loizos, Apostolos Kaldaras, Giannis Spanos, Giorgos Katsaros, Mimi Plessas, and Giorgos Hatzinasios, building one of the most extensive and enduring catalogs in Greek popular music.

Diaspora Impact

Parios's decades-long career and his role in popularizing nisiotika, island folk music rooted in the Aegean, have given his catalog particular resonance with diaspora communities connected to Greece's islands. His status as one of Greece's most consistently best-selling recording artists has kept his music present across generations of Greek and Cypriot communities abroad, from listeners who grew up with his 1970s and 80s hits to newer audiences discovering his island song catalog.
