About Melina Aslanidou

Early Life

Melina Aslanidou was born on August 28, 1974, in Stuttgart, West Germany, to Greek parents, moving with her family to Greece as a young child and growing up in Paralimni, near Giannitsa, in Pella. She began singing early with the local Paralimni choir, gaining exposure to traditional Pontic, Thracian, and Byzantine music. At eighteen, she moved to Thessaloniki for her studies and started performing in small student venues, where in 1996 she met traditional musician Christos Mitrentzis, beginning a collaboration that took her to the WOMAD Festival in Berlin as a representative of Greek traditional music.

Musical Style & Sound

Aslanidou works across éntekhno and Laïko, known for a powerful voice shaped early on by Greek traditional and folk influences from her choir years. Her sound bridges the more literary, composer-driven éntekhno tradition with contemporary Laïko, giving her catalog range across both styles.

Career Rise

Aslanidou fronted the group Oi Apenanti from 2000 to 2002, releasing the hit single "To Parelthon Thimithika" in 2001 before going solo. After moving to Athens in 2002, she began collaborating with George Dalaras in live concerts and tours, a relationship she has described as a mentorship, resulting in the song "Libra." She released her debut solo album, "To Perasma," in 2003, and toured that year with Dimitra Galani. She went on to perform full seasons with Eleftheria Arvanitaki in 2004 and toured with Giannis Kotsiras that same year, building a reputation through high-profile collaborations before releasing her second album, "Paihnidi Einai," in 2005. In 2014, she became a coach on ANT1's "The Voice of Greece."

Diaspora Impact

Aslanidou's own background as a Greek born and raised partly in Germany gives her particular resonance with diaspora audiences who share a similar bicultural upbringing. Her extensive collaborations with major Greek artists including George Dalaras, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, and Dimitra Galani have kept her connected to the broader Greek music tradition that diaspora audiences continue to follow.
