Some milestones arrive with fireworks. Vangelis Pavlidis got his from a few yards out, in the Azores, with his team a goal down. On Monday, October 26, 2026, the Greece captain met a Gianluca Prestianni cutback in the 62nd minute to equalize at Santa Clara, and Prestianni finished the comeback six minutes later as Benfica won 2-1 at the Estádio São Miguel to close matchday 9 of the Primeira Liga, as RTP and Bola na Rede reported. That equalizer was the 200th goal of his career.
For readers just catching up, Pavlidis is the 27-year-old striker who leads Greece's national team and has turned into the reference point of Benfica's attack in his third season in Lisbon. We last wrote about him when he came off the bench to score in the Europa League win over Celtic. Before this trip, Dia de Jogo, citing O Jogo, had him sitting on 199 career goals, one shot away from a round number that every striker quietly counts.
The first half belonged to the home side. Santa Clara went ahead in the 32nd minute when Brazilian forward Fernando converted a penalty after a VAR check, per zerozero and Ta Nea. Zerozero described the Azoreans pressing high, winning the fight in midfield and keeping Pavlidis well marked by Emanuel Moreira, so Benfica barely reached the final third. It was a fair lead at the break. Nobody gets anything easy on that island.
Benfica came out pushing after the interval, and the equalizer was a lovely piece of work before it was a simple finish. Prestianni beat Lucas Soares on the left, drove into the box and slid the ball across the six-yard area, where Pavlidis stretched to steer it in from close range, as zerozero, Ta Nea and Gazzetta described it. Strikers will tell you the tap-ins count the same as the screamers. On a night like this, they absolutely do.
The number is the story. Bola na Rede and Newsit both marked the goal as the 200th of his professional career. Zerozero's count has him at 77 goals in 127 games for Benfica, and it was his ninth league goal in nine Primeira Liga matches, which keeps him top of the scoring chart in Portugal, per RTP. For a player who took the long road rather than the shortcut, that is a serious body of work.
Prestianni then made sure the milestone came with three points. In the 68th minute the young Argentine combined with Dodi Lukebakio on the right, rode a couple of ricochets into the box and drilled a low, angled shot past Lucas França for 2-1, per zerozero and Ta Nea. Benfica held on from there. Two goals in six minutes, both built by the same pair of feet.
The result keeps Benfica second in the table with 22 points, five behind leaders FC Porto and four clear of Sporting and Santa Clara, according to RTP and Newsit. RTP noted that both Sporting and Santa Clara lost a league match for the first time this season in this round, so the chasing pack just got a little tighter. Five points is not nothing in a title race. It is also not a wall.
There is history in this run too. Last week A Bola and Bola na Rede reported that Pavlidis passed Michael Manniche to become the fourth highest-scoring foreign player in Benfica history. Only Óscar Cardozo (172), Jonas (137) and Mats Magnusson (87) are ahead of him on that list. With 77 now, the Greek is ten goals away from Magnusson. At his current pace, that chase may not take as long as it sounds.
The goal also came after a scare. Dia de Jogo, citing O Jogo, reported that Pavlidis was taken off after 71 minutes against Omonia in the Europa League showing clear signs of fatigue, even sitting down on the pitch, before being cleared for the trip to the Azores. He answered any doubts in the best way a striker can. Fatigue is real in October. So is a striker who keeps showing up anyway.
This is turning into a good autumn for Greek forwards abroad. Christos Douvikas has been scoring in Serie A and Europe for Como, and we covered it when Douvikas signed a new Como contract through 2031. Two Greek strikers, two big clubs, two very different routes. For the national team, that is exactly the kind of depth up front that every national team coach dreams about, and both will be watched closely.
My take: two hundred career goals at 27 is a number that deserves a proper pause. Pavlidis has never been a player built on hype, and that is what makes this special. He learned his trade step by step, kept improving and now leads the line for one of Europe's most famous clubs and for his country. Monday's goal was not pretty, but it was exactly where a number nine should be. That is the whole job.
Next up, Benfica keep chasing Porto, and the next Pavlidis goal will be number 201. Keep an eye on our Greek Sports section for more on Greek players making noise around Europe. Two hundred down. On to the next one.
