About the Beach
Nero is widely considered the best beach on Kato Koufonisi, featuring a long stretch of fine pebbles and sand backed by dramatic, arid cliffs. The name means "water," likely referring to the nearby freshwater springs that once sustained the island’s small farming community. The water is an intense, deep emerald color and is exceptionally transparent, offering incredible visibility for snorkeling. It is a favorite spot for free campers and day-trippers who arrive by the local shuttle boat from the main island. The beach is entirely unorganized, maintaining a raw and alternative vibe that is synonymous with the Koufonisia experience. A few large trees at the far end of the beach provide the only natural shade, creating a coveted spot for those staying the whole day. It is a place of rugged beauty and total freedom, where the focus is entirely on the sun and the perfect sea.
