Alexander Payne

The Intellectual Poet of Cinema

An Oscar-winning director from Omaha who reclaimed his "Papadopoulos" heritage and became a master of the human comedy.

Bio

Born Constantine Alexander Payne in Omaha, Nebraska, he is the grandson of Greek immigrants who anglicized the family name from "Papadopoulos" to "Payne" to blend in during the early 20th century. Growing up in a family of restaurateurs, Payne developed a sharp, observant sense of humor that would later define his filmmaking style. He studied history and Spanish at Stanford before attending UCLA Film School. His movies are known for their satirical look at American society and their deep human empathy. Payne is a proud Philhellene who often incorporates Greek values into his life and work; he famously thanked his mother in Greek during his 2012 Oscar acceptance speech and frequently speaks about the "pioneering spirit" of his ancestors as his primary motivation.
