History

Greek immigrants began arriving in Norwich, Connecticut in the 1890s, drawn by the city's large textile manufacturing economy and the promise of steady work in one of New England's most productive mill towns. These early settlers established businesses that became fixtures of Norwich's commercial life, opening restaurants, candy kitchens, bakeries, and soda shops that served both the Greek community and their broader neighbors in the Rose City.

As the community grew, the need for a permanent house of worship became clear. The first Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church was established in the former Buckingham Chapel at 140 Boswell Avenue, giving the Norwich Greek community its spiritual home and a gathering place for the social and cultural life that sustained them in their new land. For decades the Boswell Avenue church served the parish faithfully, but as the congregation continued to expand the original building could no longer accommodate the growing number of worshippers.

A building committee was formed, and land was purchased at 247 Washington Street. Construction of the new Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church proceeded through the dedicated labor of parishioners and volunteers, and on April 7, 1974, Archbishop Iakovos traveled to Norwich to dedicate and open the doors of the new church, marking the beginning of a new era for the community. The larger, modern facility allowed for continued growth and provided space for the worship, fellowship, and community programs that have defined parish life in Norwich ever since, including the Annual Greek Food Festival, now in its fifth decade, which has become one of southeastern Connecticut's most beloved cultural celebrations.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 247 Washington Street in Norwich serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of southeastern Connecticut as a parish of the Direct Archdiocesan District of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community whose roots in the Quinebaug Valley reach back more than a century to the Greek immigrants who built a new life in the mill towns of New England.
