About the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh

The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh is the Ohio River Valley regional jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, covering the state of West Virginia in its entirety, the majority of Pennsylvania excluding the greater Philadelphia area, and the central and eastern portions of Ohio. Its 51 parishes and missions serve the Greek Orthodox faithful across this three-state territory, which is organized internally into four regional deaneries: Central, East, Northwest, and Southwest. Greek Orthodox Christians have been present in the Ohio River Valley since the later decades of the nineteenth century, drawn by the steel, coal, and industrial economies that made Pittsburgh and the surrounding region one of the most active centers of immigrant settlement in the country. The first organized parish in the territory, Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Pittsburgh, was founded in 1907 and serves today as the mother church and cathedral of the Metropolis.

The Sixth Archdiocesan District was established in 1955 under Archbishop Michael of North and South America, with its offices placed in Pittsburgh. A consortium of parish leaders and women of the Philoptochos acquired the building at 5201 Ellsworth Avenue in the Shadyside neighborhood to serve as the district headquarters, the same address the Metropolis occupies today. In December 1955, Archbishop Michael ordained the Very Reverend Polyefktos Finfinnis as Bishop of Tropaiou, the first hierarch to serve the Sixth District. Following the 1979 reorganization decree of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the district became the Diocese of Pittsburgh. It was elevated to the rank of metropolis in December 2002.

Metropolitan Savas was enthroned as Metropolitan of Pittsburgh on December 8, 2011, following his election by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Phanar, Constantinople. He is the sixth hierarch to lead the jurisdiction since the establishment of the Sixth Archdiocesan District in 1955, following Bishops Polyefktos, Theodosios, Gerasimos, and Anthimos, and Metropolitan Maximos. Prior to his election, Metropolitan Savas served as Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America from 1999 to 2009 and as Director of the Archdiocesan Office of Church, Society, and Culture.

Four monasteries operate within the Metropolis: Saint Gregory Palamas Monastery in Perrysville, Ohio; Nativity of the Theotokos Monastery in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania; Holy Protection Monastery in White Haven, Pennsylvania; and the Entrance of the Theotokos Skete in Hayesville, Ohio. The Metropolis also operates Camp Nazareth, a youth camping and retreat facility that has served generations of young people from parishes across the jurisdiction.
