History

Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Warren, Ohio is one of the oldest Greek Orthodox parishes in the Mahoning Valley, its founding predating the establishment of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America itself in 1922. The parish was founded in 1922, the same year the Archdiocese was formally constituted, placing it among the earliest communities in what would become the institutional framework of Greek Orthodoxy in America.

The parish has carried the name and intercessions of Saint Demetrios the Great Martyr and Myrrh-Streamer through more than a century of Mahoning Valley life, honoring the beloved third-century military officer of Thessalonica whose feast on October 26 is one of the most celebrated in the Greek Orthodox world. The honor and respect shown to the saint throughout the Orthodox world have found an enduring home in Warren, where successive generations have sustained the parish through the cycles of growth, hardship, and renewal that have shaped northeastern Ohio's industrial history.

Among the notable figures connected to the parish is former Archbishop Spyridon of America, who has roots in the Warren community, a connection Archbishop Elpidophoros of America acknowledged when he presided at the parish's centennial celebration in October 2022, declaring that much of the history of the Church of America has been written in Warren, Ohio.

In October 2022 the community gathered to celebrate its centennial with Great Vespers presided over by Archbishop Elpidophoros, followed by a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy and a Centennial Banquet held under the theme Honoring our History, Envisioning our Future, a milestone that honored the faith, sacrifice, and endurance of all who had built and sustained the parish across its first century.
